Coordinators Corner

In the dynamic realm of nursing education, the significance of clinical experiences cannot be overstated. Janell Slavey, MSN, RN, a member of ACEMAPP and the Undergraduate Clinical Placement Coordinator at Michigan State University (MSU), has been instrumental in shaping clinical education practices. With 23 years of nursing experience under her belt, Slavey brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for fostering the next generation of nurses.

Meeting Workforce Demands
One of the critical challenges in healthcare today is the shortage of registered nurses. MSU, under Slavey's guidance, has taken proactive measures to address this issue. According to Slavey, "MSU has steadily been increasing nursing student numbers to accommodate the need for registered nurses needed in the workforce." This strategic approach aligns with the university's commitment to producing a skilled and competent nursing workforce that can meet the growing demands of the healthcare industry.

A Commitment to Providing Positive Experiences
As the Undergraduate Clinical Placement Coordinator, Slavey plays a pivotal role in ensuring that nursing students receive top-notch clinical experiences. Despite having worked in clinical placements for less than a year, her 23 years of nursing experience provide a solid foundation for understanding the intricacies of the profession. Her dual perspective as both an educator and a seasoned RN enriches the learning environment for students.

When asked about her primary objective with clinical placements, Slavey emphasized, "My main goal is to provide the best clinical experiences possible that will continue as the student progresses through the program and be able to utilize valuable skills learned for the workforce." This goal reflects a commitment to not only meeting educational requirements but also preparing students for the real-world challenges they will face as future healthcare professionals.

The Future of Clinical Education at MSU
Janell Slavey's dedication to enhancing clinical education at Michigan State University is evident in her strategic initiatives and commitment to providing quality learning experiences. By addressing the workforce demands, incorporating best practices, and prioritizing the student experience, Slavey is making significant contributions to the future of nursing education at MSU. As the university continues to produce competent and compassionate nurses, Janell Slavey stands as a beacon of inspiration for educators and students alike in the field of clinical education.
